Lockerbie Tornadoes 55 v 69 St Mirren Buddies

Strathclyde League (Senior Men – Division 1)

St Mirren WCS Buddies Senior Men made the long trip down to Lockerbie for their SLBA Division 1 game against the Lockerbie Tornadoes. Buoyed by a cup win away to West Lothian Wolves midweek, the Buddies travelled down with a short bench due to work commitments and injuries.

The Buddies started the game well scoring points on the fast break and some well run offence. Some early foul trouble for Martin Muir meant that the bulk of the play was going through Matt Cochrane, Stewart Booth and Gordon Howe. Lockerbie kept in touch with some good 3pt shooting and at half time the Buddies held a slight 29-27 lead.

Into the second half, Buddies and Lockerbie traded baskets early on until the Buddies opened up a 42-31 lead thanks to some strong inside play from Robbie Weir. A few lapses in defensive concentration brought the tornadoes right back in it, closing the gap to 44-42 at one stage.

Into the final quarter and the Buddies stepped up their play again. Back-to-back 3pointers from Blair Meikle opened up a gap for the Buddies. Some lapses in concentration from Lockerbie and early foul trouble started to gift the Buddies some easy points and frequent trips to the line. This opened up a comfortable lead with 3minutes left in the game and the formalities were played out giving the Buddies a comfortable 69-55 win in the end. This leaves the Buddies in 2nd place with a 3-1 record so far. A good away result with a short bench with all players contributing to the result, with coach Eddie Alexander getting on the scoresheet.  Final score 55-69

Saints’ top scorers were Gordon Howe with 18 points, Matthew Cochrane on 14 points, Robbie Weir 10 points and Stewart Booth with a handy 9 points

Next up is a home tie in the SLBA Anderson Cup on Wednesday 7th December against Division 2 side Clyde Cavaliers, 7.45pm tip off at Renfrew Sports Centre
