National League Div 1
St Mirren West College Scotland 94 v 46 Boroughmuir Blaze
St Mirren West College Scotland 93 v 56 Edinburgh Kings
Saint Mirren West College Scotland U16 Men travelled to Edinburgh, this weekend, and played two teams from the Capital in the quarter and semi finals of the Playoffs. The young Saints were outstanding, defeating Boroughmuir Blaze convincingly to progress to the semi finals where they met City of Edinburgh Kings in what started out a closely fought match but ended in Kings being defeated in a similar manner to their Edinburgh rivals.
In both games St Mirren showed the level of skill they have acquired and the close team dynamic which has been fostered by coach Cleary all season. With consistent scoring from Chris Feeney, Mikey Irvine and Robbie Stevenson, in both games, the opposition had a difficult time defending against their onslaught. They Saints players all played their roles to perfection, with the quick hands of Ben Mitchell often getting the intercept and strong defence from Brad Low, Craig Fraser and Owen Speirs preventing their opponents getting to the basket.
Coach Cleary was also able to run his bench in both games and give next year’s squad the opportunity to shine without being overshadowed by the players who will be moving up next season. Ewan McGivern, Greg Merrill and Aidan Lamos showed some real strength of character and highlighted their skill and speed and, along with youngsters Ross Murray and Euan Birch, proved that the future of the squad is in safe hands.
No team has so far been able to match the depth of the St Mirren bench and this has allowed the players to maintain their undefeated status for two full seasons, with only one game left to play for a perfect two season record and to win the treble for a second consecutive year.
St Mirrens final game of the season, against Falkirk Fury, will take place at The Oriam, Edinburgh on Saturday 1st April, with a 10am tip.
