Stirling Knights 66 v 95 St Mirren
Cadet Men Scottish Cup Semi Final
Saints battle Knights to ride into the Scottish Cup final.
The semi-final of the Scottish Cup saw St Mirren West College Scotland U16 Men playing Stirling Knights at the Peak Stirling, in a rematch of last week’s league game.
After being put to the sword by Saints last week, the young Knights came out fired up and ready to show their metal and a quick layup gave them the first points in the game. It wasn’t long however before the Paisley team started moving ahead with robust defense from Brad Low, consistent shooting from the guards and much applauded threes from the nimble Ben Mitchell and Saints youngest player, Euan Birch. By the end of the quarter Saints were up by 10 with a score of 21-31.
The second quarter started at pace with a three from Chris Feeney and a quick hands steal from Mitchell. The player to stop in this quarter was Owen Speirs whose strong offence drew a foul, allowing him to convert the resultant free throws to points. An acrobatic mid air steal followed and Speirs was quickly at the other end, scoring the layup and making a fine contribution to the increased lead, sitting at 33-48 going into the break.
The third quarter got off to a flying start with a couple of clever floater shots from Robbie Stevenson who continued to press on offense throughout the period. The squads traded baskets but Saints close team work and skill shone through as they increased their advantage finishing the quarter with a lead of 22 points.
Going into the final quarter with only one of Coach Stevenson’s starting 5 on court, Knights seized the opportunity to dominate and scored 9 unanswered points before a change of personnel started the baskets flowing the other way. Stevenson, with a personal tally of 12 points this quarter, Low, Irvine and Feeney were instrumental in increasing the lead and tight team work secured the win with a final score of 66-95
Top scorer for Saints were Mikey Irvine with 24 points and Robbie Stevenson with 20.
Saints are back on court again this Sunday 19 December away to Falkirk Fury at the Mariner Centre in Falkirk, 1.30pm tip.
